From EJazz News
On the piece titled “Funky Jacob,” they carve out a “jazz-a-billy (fusion and rockabilly) motif featuring guitarist Jeremy McCall’s slick picking atop the rapidly-paced rhythms. Throughout, the unit’s brisk and zippy workouts are interwoven among endearing melody lines and a few raucous swing vamps. But on “Hard Place,” McCall slams the EFX pedal to the metal, while conjuring up notions of a hybrid, psychedelic/jazz-rock aura. No doubt, it’s a likeable program and not meandering or superfluous, which are traits occasionally evidenced within these somewhat inconsistent – plugged in -- genres. As of this writing the band’s music is available via Internet download-only. – Glenn Astarita Glenn Astarita, Celebrated Jazz Critic and Writer Spirit Jazz Project has roots and soul and authenticity... groove and jazz and heritage! A live and impromptu improvisational feel of classic yet modern jamming! Michelle Sammartino, XM Satellite Radio Host, Channel 72: Beyond Jazz The Spirit Jazz Project walks a dangerous musical tightrope without falling off. Lean one way, and a precipice is waiting for bands specializing in fusion. Go the other and join straight-ahead bands with fewer fans. But Spirit manages to stay aloft by presenting music with a contemporary sound and solid performance. |
